Scottish Cross Country Championships

The men's Scottish Cross Country Championship was first held at Lanark Racecourse on 27th March 1886 when it was organised by the SAAA Sub-Committee of Management for National Championships. Two bodies, the Scottish Cross Country Association and the Scottish Harriers Union held separate National Championships over the next few years until the formation of the Scottish Cross Country Union in 1890. The Scottish Cross Country Union changed its name to the National Cross Country Union of Scotland in 1904 and back again to the Scottish Cross Country Union in 1964.

In 1950 a Junior was defined as 18-21 and a new separate Championship introduced to replace the old notion of a Junior. The Youths Championship first appeared in 1933, the Senior Boys in 1958 and the Junior Boys in 1968.

The inaugural general meeting of SWAAA took place on 25th September 1930 in Glasgow. The Daily Record of 13th December 1930 reports that 13 teams had entered for the first Scottish Women's Cross Country Championship at Bothwell with the start next to the Uddingston cricket ground and tea and prizes in the Labour Exchange. The race (an 8*1 mile relay) was won by Shettleston Ladies (61.35) by about 100 yards from Dundee Hawhill Harriers (61.40) and Maryhill Ladies (62.10). The winners recieved the Daily Record Trophy which has since been used as the present day Team Race Championship trophy. The Shettleston team consisted of N. Aitken 7.03, B. Anderson 7.30. J. Stewart 7.54, C. Harvey 7.4, M. Smith 8.09, N. Hutchison 7.17, S. Rogan 8.14 and B. Boyd 7.40. The 13 competing teams were Bellahouston H, Clydesdale H, Dundee Hawkhill, Greeock Wellpark H, Kilbarchan AAC, Kilmarnock H, Lochwinnock H, Maryhill H, Monklands H, Penicuick H, Plebain H, Shettleston H and Teviotdale H. Newpaper articles on the race can be found here.

A Women's National Cross Country Championship took place in 1932 with Nan Robson of Dundee Hawkhill Harriers winning the race. A recent Clydesdale Harriers publication refers to this race as the 2nd Championship which we interpret as meaning as acknowledging the existence of the season 1930-31 Relay. From the 1990-1 Programme it looks like the U17 and U15 Women's Championships started in season 1962-3 with the U13s in 1965-6.

While there were no Championships sanctioned by the Governing Bodies during the World Wars. What we have can be found here.

The formation of the Scottish Athletics Federation saw the amalgamation of the men's and women's Championships in 1993-4.

In season 2016-7 the SAL Road Running & Cross Country Commission followed the lead of the I.A.A.F. and harmonised the senior women's and men's distance at 10K.

In season 2018-9 in recognition of the increasing entry, the team championship in the Senior women's event was moved to 5 to count. In season 2019-20 the Senior women's event was increased to 6 to count to equalise the team medals with the men.
